‘The Wild Goose Chase’ – Pentecost

‘The Wild Goose Chase’ – Pentecost

On Pentecost Sunday, Fr Darren preached on “The Wild Goose Chase”.

A wonderful Pentecost yesterday, with the readings and prayers in Urdu, French, Irish, Finnish, Igbo and Spanish!

At Pentecost we often think of the Holy Spirit through familiar images: fire, breath, wind and the descending dove. In this sermon, Fr Darren explored another image associated with Celtic Christianity – the wild goose.

Unlike the gentle dove, the wild goose is noisy, restless and untamed. It does not sit neatly where we place it. It calls, moves, disturbs and leads us somewhere unexpected.

That makes it a powerful image for the Holy Spirit: not simply comforting us where we are, but challenging us, stirring us, and drawing us into the life and mission of God.

As we celebrated Pentecost, the sermon invited us to be open to the Spirit’s movement – even when that movement feels less like a gentle breeze and more like a wild goose chasing us!
