Revd Darren McCallig’s sermon from the Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity, celebrated in the parish as Curiosity Sunday.
Curiosity Sunday offers a welcome to anyone curious about church, God or faith. But curiosity also belongs at the heart of a faith worth believing. Reflecting on Jesus’ challenge to religious leaders to change their minds, Darren encourages us to remain open to new discoveries, to question our assumptions and never to think we have nothing left to learn.
Sharing how curiosity brought him back to faith through the Church of Ireland in Galway, Darren describes discoveries that continue to shape his understanding: God as a loving presence within, beneath and beyond all things; the Bible as an inspired record of human engagement with the divine; and prayer as words and acts of love. Faith, he suggests, is above all trust in God and in a self-giving love that even death cannot destroy.
A church should be a living community of wonder and exploration. Darren ends with an invitation to find a place here, on Curiosity Sunday and every Sunday: a place where no question is out of bounds, honest doubt is welcome and curiosity can help faith grow.
